CONVERTING FROM OIL FURNACE TO GAS

With climate change rapidly evolving each day, New York City has increased its efforts to phase out the use of the dirtiest heating oils. Since the signing of The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act) effective into law on July 18, 2019, all boilers must be converted to burn either low sulfur No. 2 heating oil, natural gas or electric heat by 2030.

Upon full implementation, these regulations will reduce the number of fine particles emitted from heating buildings by at least 63%. Lowering the overall concentration of fine particles in the city’s air from all sources by 5 percent. This estimate suggests these air quality improvements could prevent approximately 200 deaths, 100 hospitalizations, and 300 emergency room visits for illnesses caused by air pollution each year.

Converting from an oil boiler to natural gas or electric heat means cheaper heating and significant cost savings in the long run providing the following benefits:

  1. SAVE MONEY! Gas and electric heat are more efficient than oil, with the use of less energy to produce the same amount of heat. Gas and electric heat is also cheaper than oil as they have more stable prices than oil, which fluctuates depending on the market.

  2. SAFER! Gas and electric heat are safer than oil, as they do not produce carbon monoxide or other harmful emissions in the home.

  3. LOWER MAINTENANCE! Oil furnaces require more frequent cleaning and filter changes than gas furnaces. Gas furnaces need less frequent inspections and filter changes than oil-fired units because natural gas is a cleaner-burning fuel than kerosene or propane.

  4. BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Gas and electric heat are better for the environment than oil, as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels and improves air quality.

New York State’s Climate Act is the most ambitious climate law in the nation and requires New York to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and no less than 85 percent by 2050. It empowers every New Yorker to fight climate change at home, at work, and in their communities.
